How to Groom a Schnau-Tzu

Many people are opting to mix together two dog breeds to create a new hybrid breed, or designer dog. One such hybrid is a mating of a schnauzer and a Shih-Tzu, which is known as the shnau-tzu. Because these dogs are created by mating two different breeds, the coat could be more similar to one or the other, or it could be something in between. Both of these dog breeds have coats that need to be trimmed regularly, so whichever breed the schnau-tzu takes after, regular grooming is necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush your schnau-tzu with a slicker brush first. This brush will help remove tangles, dead hair and dirt.

    • 2

Brush your schnau-tzu with a metal brush after you are finished with the slicker brush to finish removing the dead hair, dirt and to smooth the coat.

    • 3

Use a mat rake to help remove any tangles that you cannot remove with the first two brushes. If even the mat rake does not work, cut the tangle out with scissors.

    • 4

Bathe your schnau-tzu every couple of weeks or when it gets into something and needs a bath. Use shampoo that is meant for dogs, and be careful when you are washing around the eyes and ears.

    • 5

Have your schnau-tzu groomed regularly. Keeping the hair cut shorter will lessen the amount of grooming you need to do. Otherwise, you need to brush your dog every other day or so, especially if the coat is more like the Shih-Tzu.
