How to Give a Pomeranian a Summer Cut

Pomeranians are pint-sized dogs known for their larger-than-life personality and their fluffy, luxurious coats. Because Pomeranians are a long-haired breed, many owners are tempted to shave their poms in the summer months to help them stay cool. However, you should never completely shave your Pomeranian in the summer because his fur might never grow back to what it once was, and they can be more susceptible to bug bites and sunburns. Because dogs don't sweat like humans do, trim the dog's fur to remove any excess for the summer months, but don't completely shave your dog.

Wash your dog and then towel dry the fur as much as possible. Allow the dog to air dry or use a hair dryer to completely dry the dog's newly cleaned fur.

    • 2

Use a pair of grooming scissors to trim the excess fur on the dog's head. Pinch the hair at the desired length between two fingers and trim it using the scissors. Use this method to trim all the fur on the dog's head. Keep the scissors parallel to the dog's eyes to make sure the cut is level.

    • 3

Brush the hair forward around the head and continue trimming the fur. You should try to create a circular shape around the dog's face, regardless of how short you are trimming the fur. When you cut the sides of the dog's head, keep the scissors vertical to the dog's face.

Brush the fur on the chest upward and then trim it on an angle. Aim toward the dog's back knee to help you cut on the correct angle. Trim the dog's chest and stomach area keeping this angle in mind. Turn the dog sideways to help trim this area.

    • 5

Trim away excess hair at the base of the tail and then twist the tail fur into a spiral shape. Hold the spiral of hair straight up and trim the end to get rid of excess fur.

Tidy the fur between the dog's toes using the tip of your scissors. Since dogs sweat through their feet, it is important to keep this fur short all summer long to keep your Pomeranian comfortable. Hold the dog's paw in your hand and carefully trim the excess fur on each toe. Repeat on all remaining paws.
