How to Bathe Long-haired Chihuahuas

Just because chihuahuas are small in stature does not mean they require less work. The grooming process for the long-haired chihuahua is slightly more complex than that of its short-haired cousin, and may require more time. The long coat requires frequent and thorough grooming to be maintained properly. Providing your chihuahua with regular bathing helps prevent matted fur and irritated skin.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush the dog thoroughly to remove any excess or matted hair remaining on the dog.

    • 2

Position a cotton ball in each of the dog's ears to prevent water from entering the ear canal.

    • 3

Place the dog into a tub or basin with a small amount of warm water. Gently wet the dog's coat with water before beginning to shampoo.

    • 4

Using a dog shampoo, begin to lather the shampoo into the dog's coat. Start at the neck and work your way down the dog's body, washing the head last.

    • 5

Pour water over the dog's coat to remove the excess shampoo.

    • 6

Dry the dog's fur using light pats with a towel, and finish with a blow-dryer on low speed and low heat.
