How to Groom a Maltipoo

A Maltepoo is a cross between the Poodle and Maltese breeds and is normally between 5 and 12 pounds. Maltepoo coats are fluffy and often wavy or curly. It is important to properly groom a Maltepoo often to keep the coat clean and prevent matting of the hair. Maltepoos do not shed, so it is important to brush them regularly to remove dead hair. Maltepoo owners can do the rest of the grooming themselves as well with just come basic items and some practice.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin grooming your Maltepoo as a puppy to get it used to being groomed.

    • 2

Brush your Maltepoo daily to remove dead hair and keep the coat clean and tangle-free.

    • 3

Bath your Maltepoo at least once a month in warm water with a mild dog shampoo. Clean around and inside the ears with a wet washcloth.

    • 4

Remove tear stains by applying a paste of equal measures of boric powder, baby powder and milk of magnesia. Apply with a soft toothbrush and remove as soon as it dries. Do not use peroxide or bleach formulas if you are not exactly sure of what you are doing. Pastes may travel down the hair shaft and into the eye. Overnight applications as well, may get into the eye itself. Use a groomer for bad stains.

    • 5

Trim the hair around a Maltepoo's eyes with trimming shears when it starts to cover the eyes.

    • 6

Brush your Maltepoo's teeth at least twice a week with a toothbrush to remove bacteria and tartar.

    • 7

Clip the tips of your Maltepoo's nails with dog nail clippers when they begin to get too long. If you can hear the nails hit the floor when the Maltipoo is walking then it's time for a trim. If you are not comfortable clipping your dog's nails, take the dog to a groomer. To trim a dog's nails, first you must know where the quick ends. The quick is a light pink color at the top of the claw. Hold your Maltepoo securely and make quick precise cuts, making sure never to cut closer to the quick than 2 mm. Cutting a claw too short and into the quick can cause bleeding. To stop the bleeding, apply silver nitrate to stop blood flow.

Take your Maltepoo to a professional groomer for one of the Maltepoo cuts whenever one is needed. A puppy cut works well on dogs with straight or silky hair. This cut trims the hair to 1 inch long with the butt left longer to look fuller. Hair on the face is then trimmed to create a round shape. A low preservation cut is for curly haired Maltepoos to keep hair from knotting. Hair is cut to 1/2 inch around the body and 3/4 inch on the legs. Ears are either left natural or rounded.
