How to Clean Up Matted Fur

Companion animals, especially dogs and cats that have long hair, can have problems with matted fur. Long-haired animals can develop deep tangles in their fur that eventually turn into a matted clump. This clump is very difficult to comb through, if not impossible. For your pet's health, you need to clean up this matted fur area either by brushing through it or removing it completely. If you've never dealt with matted fur before, consult with your vet or a professional pet groomer.

Instructions

    • 1

Attempt to comb through the matted hair using a slicker-style pet brush. If you cannot get through after a few tries, move on. Otherwise, you might hurt your pet.

    • 2

Add a small amount of cornstarch to the matted area of fur. Pull apart the mat with your fingers to separate the dead hair from the rest.

    • 3

Use a seam ripper to pull clumps loose from the mat. Work in an upward motion to protect your pet.

    • 4

Comb through the matted fur again with the slicker-style brush once you have loosened the mat somewhat. If it's still stubborn, use an even smaller comb, such as a baby comb, or repeat the preceding steps.
