Shaving and clipping the Pomeranian's anus, paws and ear is essentially the only haircut they need, according to Petpom.com. When shaving the anal area, do so very carefully and do not shave all the way down to the skin. Cut the hair to about 1/2-inch inch. Shaving this area is for hygienic purposes. It enables the dog to stay clean, because feces will not stick to his fur. When there are long hairs growing in the Pomeranian's ear, they should be plucked out. This helps the ears dry faster after the dog is bathed, which prevents mites and fleas from getting into its ears. Keeping the long hairs plucked also prevents ear infection. If your Pomeranian is growing hairs under its paw, these need to be clipped. When a dog has to walk on fur, it is bothersome, and the hairs can get caught on elements.
Lion Cut
-
One of the cuts that is given to the Pomeranian is the Pomeranian Lion Cut, in which the fur is shaved down nearly to the skin. With the Lion Cut, long fur stays in place on the chest and neck, which creates the lion's "mane." A little bit of fur is allowed to remain on the tail.
Kennel Cut
-
The Kennel Cut, another Pomeranian haircut, entails shaving down the entire coat to a length of 1/2-inch to 1 inch. The hair is a uniform length. The dog does not end up looking naked.
Puppy Cut or Teddy Bear Cut
-
Another cut, called the Puppy Cut or Teddy Bear Cut, leaves only about 1 inch of hair, or a bit longer, all over the dog. To make the fur look fluffy, it has to be hand-scissored. This takes a long time to do, and it's a hard cut to maintain. If your dog is old or very young, it may not be able to tolerate the time-consuming grooming session.
Patterened Cut
-
A Patterned Cut means that the dog is trimmed so that the hair is not the same length all over, and the dog looks like a standard Pomeranian. This requires scissor and clipper work, according to Pet Planet.
Combing and Bathing
-
Regularly comb your Pomeranian's hair, because when its hair is long it is apt to get tangled. Give your dog baths regularly or at least every two months. The water shouldn't be too hot or too cold. Keep the dog's nails clipped. If you can hear its nails clacking on the floor when it walks, that means the nails are too long. If you want to cut the dog's hair yourself, use straight shears on the toes, pads and ears. You will need both thinning and straight shears for full body haircuts. Clean out the dog's ears once a month to avoid infection. Put some baby oil on a cotton ball and use the cotton to clean out the ears, and then dry the ears completely.
Considerations
-
When the fur is shaved drastically, the hair may grow back in patches. Furthermore, when you shave a Pomeranian, it exposes its elbows and other areas of its body that are covered when it has fur. This can result in sores appearing on the dog's body, because it doesn't have the furry cushion that it is supposed to have. Some Pomeranians experience behavior issues after being shaved; they may become anxious.

Grooming Styles for Pomeranians
Pomeranians have a double coat of fur and are famous for their fluffiness. Their fur is what gives them a special look. However, somewhere along the line, it became fashionable to cut the hair of Pomeranians, which Petpom.com says is not necessary and not good for the fur, because it will never grow back to how it looked originally. However, some dog owners still prefer to have their dogs groomed, and this includes clipping and sometimes shaving.
