How to Wash Out a Skunk Odor

Your dog is not just a family friend, it is also a protector of the house. This means that if a skunk tries to intrude on your property most likely your dog won't let it, and a threatened skunk is forced to use its nature-given, horrible-smelling form of defense. When this happens, your dog can become saturated in a terrible odor that it cannot escape. In this situation, you need to leap to your furry friend's rescue and offer some nasal relief by removing the odor from the dog's coat. This is done with a simple home mixture made of items found around your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Combine 1 qt. of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, 2 tbsp. liquid dish-washing soap. Mix these ingredients in a large bowl. It's normal for the mixture to bubble up because of the oxidation.

    • 2

Dip a rag into the bowl while the mixture is bubbling since the oxidation helps remove the skunk odor. Completely wash your dog with the rag. Dip the rag back into the mixture frequently and saturate your dog in the mixture.

Rinse the dog with warm water and dump the leftover mixture. You cannot store this mixture because it will bubble up to create pressure that can cause a small eruption in the container.
