Wash your Maltese's face with a small drop of tearless dog shampoo, using a washcloth. Gently tip your dog's head up and rinse all traces of the shampoo thoroughly. Apply conditioner and rinse again. Remove excess water with a towel, then blow dry, using the medium heat setting.

Place your Maltese's head against your chest. Use a small metallic comb to comb the hair on your dog's face. Start from the top of the dog's head, then comb the hair downward and outward, making sure to be careful around the eyes.

Comb the hair on top of the dog's ears, then lift each ear upward and comb the hair underneath them. Sometimes the dog's hair can become matted, so place your fingers next to the dog's skin to prevent the skin from pulling.

Style your Maltese's face as desired. There are a wide variety of styles that you can try. For example, you can use a bow to tie the hair in a ponytail. Gather the hair in your palms. Use one hand to hold the hair on top of the dog's head. Open the elastic ponytail holder with your other hand. Place the ponytail holder over the hair and wrap it around the hair twice to keep it in place.
