How to Prevent Clipper Burns

Clipper burns occur when dog grooming clippers are used improperly. This leads to irritation on the dog's skin and may cause the animal to scratch the area due to the irritation. The irritation is similar to a human shaving without any shaving cream or other lubricant on his skin. The dog may scratch at the sensitive areas and cause a "hot spot" that may lead to infections or other skin problems. It is not difficult to use the clippers in the correct manner to prevent these irritations.

Guide the clippers flat along the dog's body and move the clippers with the contours of the body. Clip in the way the coat runs, instead of against the grain. This prevents uneven patches and bare spots that may become irritated.

Glide the clippers flat along the coat. Use a gentle pressure to avoid shaving the dog too closely and causing clipper burns. This is particularly important around the anus, genitals and the underbelly.

Check the blades on your clippers every few minutes to ensure the tool is not becoming hot to the touch. If they are, change the blades. Clip the sensitive areas of your dog's coat first, this prevent clipper burns from the blades getting hot without you realizing it.
