Pom Cleaning Activities

The Pomeranian, also known as a Pom or dwarf spitz, is a dog breed that is easily recognized by its size, as well as its thick, fluffy coat and highly vocal nature. These fun-loving, active dogs require regular cleaning to keep them looking their best. Frequent bathing, grooming and dental care are all included on the upkeep schedule. Include regular nail trimming to finish off your cleaning activities.
  1. Teeth Cleaning

    • Although your Pom may not like it, dental health is important for dogs, too. You should brush a dog's teeth every one to two days. Brush the dog's teeth with dog toothpaste and a special toothbrush. Hold the dog's mouth closed gently. Tuck the brush under the lips, against the teeth, and move the brush toward the back molars. Concentrate on brushing back there first and work your way toward the front. If you get a chicken- or beef-flavored toothpaste, the dog will think it's some sort of treat, instead of something scary.

    Grooming

    • You should bathe your dog every one to three months. Bathe your Pom with warm water and a mild dog shampoo. Use absorbent towels to dry the dog, but don't vigorously rub the hair. Use a hair dryer on a low setting to finish drying the dog. Brush the hair with a soft-bristled brush after you are done. Additionally, brush your dog daily to remove snarls and loose hair. On average, you should spend about 15 minutes a day brushing the dog.

    Ear Cleaning

    • A dog's ears can accumulate some nasty buildup. This stuff may even cause an unpleasant odor, if left untreated. Use a damp washcloth to clean around the dog's ear area and remove buildup. Then, clean the ear area with a cotton ball and some ear wash. Only wash the outer ear area. You never want to shove anything down the inner ear canal, as this may cause serious damage.

    Toe Nails

    • Dogs' toe nails need to be trimmed regularly as they start to get long. Trim the Pom's toe nails with dog nail clippers to keep this area nice and tidy. Only cut off the tips of the nail. If a nick occurs during the trimming, use styptic powder or stick to stop the blood immediately. Grind down the ends of the nails with a dog grooming tool (resembles a Dremel tool) when you are done trimming.
