How to Bathe a Pekingese

The Pekingese is a small dog with a flat face and wide muzzle. These dogs are very affectionate and independent and bond closely with their owners. The hair of a Pekingese has a very soft undercoat with a long outer coat lying on top. The hair can get matted and tangled without proper care. Bathing a Pekingese is essential for keeping the hair clean and soft. A thorough bath should keep your Pekingese clean for a month unless your dog spends a great amount of time outdoors.

Instructions

    • 1

Wet the Pekingese's hair with warm water. Make sure the water is not too hot. Lather a moderate amount of dog shampoo in the hair, and work it in thoroughly with your hands. Wash the hindquarters and legs well, as these areas pick up more dirt than others.

    • 2

Wash the dog's face with a little shampoo and water on your fingers. Be gentle around the nose, eyes and mouth. Do not allow soap to get into the dog's eyes. Use your fingertips to wipe away any debris around the mouth. Keep shampoo out of the ears. Check the temperature of the water again to make sure it is still warm. Water that is too cool can make the dog sick.

    • 3

Carefully rinse the shampoo from the dog's body. Do not pour water over the dog's face or around the ears. If necessary, place cotton balls in the ears to avoid getting water in them. Excess water in the ears can make the Pekingese prone to ear infections.

    • 4

Dry the Pekingese with a soft, clean towel. Don't tousle the hair too much, as this will cause tangles. Carefully brush the wet hair until it is tangle free. Spray a detangling spray if necessary.

    • 5

Dry the dog's hair with a hair dryer on the lowest setting. Brush the hair in the direction of the growth as you dry the hair. Your Pekingese is now freshly bathed and ready to go!
