How to Clip a Pom

Pomeranians are like little balls of fluff. Their fur is their crowning glory, which you must regularly wash and brush to prevent knots and matting. Never shave or clip Pomeranians' coats with clippers. Use only scissors to clean up excess hair and keep them looking neat and tidy. Be patient when grooming a young dog, and in time and with repetition, she will relax and learn to enjoy the attention.

Instructions

Wash your pom. Take care not to get soap in her eyes and ears. Blow dry with a hair dryer on low heat and brush the fur away from the skin with a slicker brush so it stands up.

    • 2

Start at the head. Hold one ear between your fingers and trim the hair across level with the eyes. Move the scissors round to the outside and trim again. Repeat with the other ear. If you hold each ear and cover it with your fingers, you will not cut the flesh by mistake.

Brush the facial hair out. Face the pom toward you and trim around the face and shoulders to create a rounded effect. Lift the dog by her front legs and continue to trim the tummy hairs. Stand the dog sideways and trim the bottom line from one third of the way up the inside of the front leg in a semi-circular shape to one third of the way up the back leg.

Brush the hair outwards on the legs. Trim off all untidy hair to neaten up the leg lines. Cut the hair short under the tail around the anal area and around the base of the tail. Twirl the end of the tail hair and cut it off while twirled, taking care not to make it too short. Cut the hair between the toes and under the pads.

Clean the ears with ear cleaning fluid and cotton balls. Do not force anything into the ear and be gentle. Wipe around and under the eyes with a wet wash cloth and water but do not touch the eyes themselves.

    • 6

Trim the nails if you feel confident enough. It is extremely important that you do not cut into the fleshy part of the nail or you will cause the dog pain and it will bleed. You can see the quick in light colored nails but proceed with great caution if the nails are black. File the nails smooth with a dremel if you have one and again do not remove too much.

Clean your pom's teeth. Dip your finger into a paste made from baking soda and water and rub it gently over her teeth. This will whiten them. Alternatively, you can use doggy toothpaste and a doggy toothbrush if your dog will allow it.
