Purchase a pair of standard dog grooming clippers. These clippers can be purchased from pet supply stores. Clipper guards in sizes one to six come with the clippers; however, additional guards can be purchased from the pet supply store or direct from the clipper manufacturer. Attach the longest guard you have to the end of the clippers. The size of the guard should be a size six. Be sure the clipper blades are sharp and properly oiled before use.

Select a comfortable location to groom your golden retriever. This location should be quiet and free of distractions. Have a few dog snacks to reward your dog for good behavior while grooming.

Run the clippers through the retriever's fur in the same direction it grows. By running the clippers in the direction of growth with the long guard, you will thin out the thickness of the coat. Do not run the clippers against the fur, as this will create a shaving effect. The golden retriever's fur should never be shaved.

Change the size six clipper guard to a size two guard or one that is appropriate to your dog's fur length. Trim the excess fur from the inside of the golden retriever's ears. Use caution when trimming the ears, as the skin is very thin and sensitive in this are. You will then trim the paws with the smaller guard.

Take a de-shedding brush and run it through the retriever's fur in the same direction of growth. You will need to use the de-shedding brush, as the clippers will only thin the top coat of the retriever. Continue brushing until the shedding fur becomes minimal. Give your dog a bath to wash away any excess loose fur.
