How to Groom an Older Pomeranian

Older Pomeranians have different grooming needs than younger ones. Establishing a grooming routine is important for older Pomeranians. Poor circulation and skin tone affects the condition of your dog's skin and coat, making her susceptible to illness and disease. Regular grooming keeps your Pomeranian's skin and coat in peak condition. Learning how to groom your "ball of fluff" not only strengthens the bond between you but keeps her happy and healthy.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush your Pomeranian every day with a wide slicker brush. Set aside 15 minutes. Make sure you brush his undercoat. Brush up and out to keep your Pomeranian's fluffy appearance.

    • 2

Comb your Pomeranian with a wide-tooth comb to find tangles the brush missed. Go slowly in case you find a mat. Remove any mats you find. If you cannot comb out the mat, trim it off.

    • 3

Bathe your Pomeranian once a month in warm water. Older Pomeranians are prone to allergies and dry skin. Use a mild shampoo formulated for dogs. Don't get water in her ears.

    • 4

Dry your Pomeranian with thick, absorbent towels. Don't use a blow dryer. Make sure he's completely dry so he doesn't catch a chill.

    • 5

Run your hands over your Pomeranian's body from head to tail. Check for skin problems, growths and tumors as changes in skin texture could be a sign of internal health problems. Early detection could save your dog's life.

    • 6

Trim your Pomeranian's anal area, ears and paws. Remove all stray hairs. Shave her anal area to within 1/2 inch for good hygiene. Pluck out any long hairs growing in her ear canals to prevent ear infections. Clip any hairs growing under her paws because this could pose a health issue.

Cut your Pomeranian's nails every three weeks with good-quality dog nail clippers. Watch out for the "quick" that runs down the middle of each nail. If you cut this vein, use a styptic pencil to control the bleeding. Your Pomeranian's nails should not touch the ground when he is standing still. If his nails are too long, it can affect his gait and balance.

Brush your Pomeranian's teeth three times a week. Pomeranians are prone to tooth decay and gum disease. Brushing keeps your dog's teeth and gums healthy between professional cleanings. Use a toothpaste formulated for dogs. These toothpastes are usually beef or chicken flavored and more palatable to dogs.
