Tips for Bathing Black Labradors

Black Labrador Retrievers are loyal, friendly and patient dogs. Generally, Black Labs are fond of water but they might not enjoy bathing. You can start bathing your Black Labrador after he is 8 weeks old. Bathing your Black Labrador can get messy, so perform this activity outdoors, if you can.
  1. Bathing Frequency

    • Do not bathe your Black Labrador more frequently than once a month; some Labs need bathing only two to three times a year. Bathing removes the natural body oils that provide the fur's natural sheen and protect the coat. Decide on the bathing frequency depending on your dog's living environment and type of activities.

    Prepare for the Bath

    • Prepare the lukewarm water, dog shampoo, brush, drying mat and towel. You can bathe your Black Labrador in the bath tub, although it is preferable to do it outside. Quickly brush your dog's fur before bathing to remove loose hair. Black Labs lose a lot of hair during bathing. Use dry shampoo if your dog requires more frequent bathing.

    During the Bath

    • Hold your dog firmly while you bathe him or get someone to help you. Continuously praise your dog and give him treats. Rinse the dog's coat and apply the shampoo on the wet hair. Gently massage his skin when applying the shampoo. Wet the dog's head only after you have washed the rest of the body. Black Labradors strongly shake their heads when wet.

Avoid Wetting the Eyes and the Ears

    • The eyes and ears of Black Labradors are sensitive to water. Do not wet the dog's eyes and ears when bathing him. Clean his face by gently wiping it with a wet tissue. Apply some mineral oil around the eyes to keep the water and shampoo away from the eyes. Protect the dog's ears by inserting cotton pads.

    Rinse the Dog

    • Rinse your dog's fur thoroughly after the bath to remove all traces of shampoo and prevent irritations and rashes. Use a hand-help shower head or a hose for more flexibility. Use lukewarm water. Check the rinsing water's temperature so it doesn't fluctuate.

    Dry Your Black Labrador

    • If you live in a warm climate, simply wipe your dog with a towel and let him dry in the sun. If the weather is cold, wipe him with a towel and use a hairdryer to complete the process.

    Use Only Dog Bathing Products

    • Human shampoos are too aggressive for the dog and might cause allergic reactions, excessive drying or irritations. Dog shampoos are milder and do not destroy the skin's natural pH.
