Instructions for Grooming & Bathing Chug Puppies

The Chug, also known as Pugwawa, is a mixed breed between a Chihuahua and a Pug. Chug puppies are very lively and friendly. Grooming a Chug puppy is easy, and you can start when the puppy is 6 weeks old. Grooming sessions are best when the puppy is sleepy so that he is more cooperative. Certain grooming activities (cleaning teeth, checking for ticks or brushing) should occur more often than others (bathing), so you can perform either a full or a partial grooming session.

Check for ticks and fleas. Perform this procedure after each outing. Pay special attention to the ears, the paws and around the mouth. Look for possible scratches or other types of skin injuries. If you find ticks, remove them using a pair of tweezers. If you find fleas, consult your vet to get a suitable treatment.

Prepare lukewarm bath water for the puppy. Bathe him indoors, especially if the weather is cold. Use hypoallergenic shampoo designed for puppies. Wet your puppy's coat and apply shampoo, gently massaging the skin. Avoid getting shampoo into his eyes and ears. Rinse your pet thoroughly using either a cup or a hand-held shower head. Dry the puppy's fur and ears using a soft towel.

Brush your Chug puppy after the bath using a soft brush. Follow the direction in which the hair grows. Brushing helps get rid of dander and loose hair. Chug puppies usually do not need daily brushing, but you should increase the brushing frequency during shedding periods.

Trim the Chug puppy's nails using clippers designed for dogs. Hold the puppy's paw with one hand and clip his nails with the other. Cut only small pieces at a time and avoid cutting into the nail quick, which can cause bleeding.

Brush the Chug puppy's teeth. Use a small toothbrush and toothpaste designed for puppies. Brush the pointy teeth by going upward and downward, and perform circular movements to clean the back teeth. Ideally, you should brush your puppy's teeth every day or at least twice a week to prevent the accumulation of plaque and tartar.

Clean the ears using cotton swabs and a saline solution. The external canal of the Chug puppy's ear is often exposed, and the puppy is prone to ear mites.
