How to Groom Schnoodles

A hybrid puppy's coat can take the characteristics of either breed. A schnoodle, which is a cross between a schnauzer and a poodle, can grow coarse hair on some parts of its body and softer hair on other parts. These dogs need frequent grooming to keep hair soft and manageable. With a little patience, you can keep your schnoodle looking neat and clean.

Instructions

    • 1

Give your schnoodle bath with dog shampoo and conditioning rinse. A schnoodle's hair can get dry easily without proper conditioning. Let the cream rinse sit in the dog's hair for at least 10 minutes before you rinse it out so it can soften the hair. Dry your dog with a towel.

    • 2

Clean the ears gently with an ear wash made for dogs. This will remove excess water from the ears and help prevent infection. This is important because schnoodles can be especially prone to ear infections.

    • 3

Rub a few drops of the olive oil between the palm of your hands and spread into the dog's fur. Olive oil will add some moisture to a schnoodle's hair, which is very important to its sensitive skin.

    • 4

Dry the dog's hair with the hair dryer on a low setting. Gently brush with the slicker brush to remove the tangles. The schnoodle's hair is thin and dries quickly, so be careful not to over dry it.

    • 5

Trimg the dog's fur with the #4F blade on your hair clippers. Shave in the direction of the hair growth, starting in the back and eventually moving to the sides. This will make it easier to get an even trim.

    • 6

Trim the chest fur with the blade on your hair clippers. The schnoodle's chest fur is fine and tends to get matted easily, so it's best to keep this area trimmed short. Carefully snip any matted areas under the arms and legs with grooming scissors.

    • 7

Trim the fur around the dog's legs and feet. Don't use the clippers on the legs. Instead, use the grooming scissors to gently trim the fur. Brush the fur using the slicker brush to decide how short you want it before you start cutting. Trim the fur growing between the dog's foot pads very carefully with the blade on the clippers.

    • 8

Trim the hair around the dog's rear end with the blade on the hair clippers. The dog will stay much cleaner with less fur around this area. Use the grooming scissors to trim the tail to the desired length.

    • 9

Use grooming scissors specially designed for trimming ears to trim the hair around the ears and eyes. You can use regular grooming scissors to trim the beard and fur on top of the head. The wavy hair typically looks best if you leave it a little longer at the top and shorter around the face.

Cut the dog's nails with dog clippers. Schnoodles usually have black nails, making it difficult to see the quick. Do not trim the nails too short. One final brush with a soft bristle brush and your schnoodle will be properly groomed and ready to go.
