How to Clean a Schnauzer's Beard

Schnauzers have a scruffy topcoat and a soft undercoat, with distinctive characteristics such as feathery eyebrows and beards. The beards often become dirty, matted and discolored. Stains appear due to saliva, yeast infections and dyes in foods and treats. Cleaning the dog's beard regularly will help keep the fur appealing and free of debris that may also cause an unpleasant odor.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the schnauzer's beard with a commercial whitening shampoo. Follow the directions on the shampoo to ensure that you use it properly. Dry the fur before you continue to clean the beard if stains remain.

    • 2

Brush the beard with a metal comb or brush. Brush the fur to loosen any knots and tangled hairs to remove any debris from the beard. Pick at the knots instead of pulling on them to prevent discomfort.

    • 3

Wipe the beard with scent-free baby wipes. You can also purchase pet wipes at your local pet supply store. The wipes remove debris, dirt and food grime, and you can clean the beard with them daily.

    • 4

Soak a microfiber washcloth in distilled white vinegar. Wring out the excess vinegar and rub the washcloth over the schnauzer's beard. Rinse the beard with clean warm water.

Sprinkle baking soda onto the schnauzer's beard. Brush the excess baking soda off to help loosen dirt and freshen the beard.
