Styptic powder is a first-aid supply that stops bleeding by contracting the tissue around an injury site to close off blood vessels. There are a few main uses of styptic powder. The bleeding should stop quickly after making contact with the powder. If you see a small amount of flowing blood, you can apply gentle pressure to the injury site and apply a bit more of the powder. Contact a vet or a medical doctor if bleeding is not quickly controlled.

    Other Forms

    • Besides finding styptic in powder form, you can also find it in a medicinal stick form. Styptic sticks resemble a white pen and can be pressed directly to the bleeding area.

    Warnings

    • Styptic powder is used for minor, superficial cuts. Do not use this product on deep wounds, severe cuts or in body cavities.
