How to Clean Your Dog Without Actually Brushing It

With some breeds of dogs, it is absolutely necessary to brush the coat both before and after a bath. This is generally longer haired breeds or breeds that do not have a set shedding season. However, you can clean and bathe your short-haired dog without actually brushing the fur at all. If you're not sure whether or not your dog needs to be brushed, consult with your veterinarian to be sure.

Put your dog in the tub or go outside. Use warm water to wet down all of the dog's fur.

    • 2

Lather the fur using shampoo made specifically for dogs. Do not use people shampoo. if you're using a flea shampoo, always start with your dog's head and move toward the back end or the fleas will scatter toward the face.

    • 3

Scrub your dog's fur using circular motions with your hands. This helps to remove loose fur from a short haired dog without the need to brush.

    • 4

Rinse your dog with warm water. Continue moving your hands across the fur in a circular motion to remove suds and loose fur.

    • 5

Dry your dog as thoroughly as possible using a large towel. Do not leave the fur dripping wet in any area. Rubbing with the towel will help to remove more moist hair, but it also prevents things like bacterial, fungal and yeast growth from wet fur.
