How Can I Get Rid of the Hair in My Dog's Ears?

Dogs have hair that grows inside the ear canal that can accumulate dirt and debris, hold moisture, stop airflow to the ear and allow build up of yeast. Excess hair in the dog's ears can cause inner ear infections if not regularly groomed. Removing hair from inside a dog's ears is an easy process requiring a few simple tools. You can manually pluck inner ear hair with little or no discomfort to the animal.

Instructions

    • 1

Sprinkle ear powder into the dog's ear. Ear powder will allow you to get a better grip on the hair.

    • 2

Grasp a few inner ear hairs and pluck them out. Be careful not to pull on longer outside ear hairs, which will hurt if pulled. Inner ear hair will pluck out easily causing no pain to the dog.

    • 3

Use long-nosed tweezers to pull out inner ear hair. If you prefer, you can use tweezers rather than your fingers to pluck the hair.

    • 4

Use a helper to hold the dog while you pluck its ears. If the dog wiggles or is difficult to handle when you first attempt to pluck its ears, enlist the aid of a helper to hold the dog.

    • 5

Feed your dog treats. After a couple of plucks, give your dog a treat to keep it happy throughout the process.

    • 6

Take short breaks between the plucks if the dog is struggling with the ear grooming process.

    • 7

Use blunt-nosed scissors to trim hair inside the ear canal. If your dog has little hair inside the ear, you can trim it with scissors.

    • 8

Rub the dog's ears after plucking.
