How to Detangle Pomeranian Fur

The Pomeranian is a feisty, outgoing breed popular both for its personality and its long, bushy coat. While it is adorable, all that fur can often become tangled or matted. This can irritate your dog's skin and can also leave him looking unattractive, which is a problem if you plan to enter him in a dog show. Remove tangles as quickly as possible to keep your Pomeranian happy and show-ready.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy a detangling spray from your local pet supply store. Coating the affected fur will make it slippery and easier to pull apart matted hairs. If you cannot buy the spray, bathe your dog and let his fur dry before you remove the tangles.

Separate the matted fur with a comb. Comb from the outside of the affected area and work your way around the knotted fur.

Split the mat into smaller sections. Dividing the mat will make it easier to detangle and will cause your Pomeranian less discomfort. You can use a dematting tool or the sharp blade of an open pair of scissors. Cut the mat into small sections lengthwise. Work away from the skin to make sure you don't cut your Pom by mistake. Comb the separated matted fur to remove the tangles. Start from the end and work your way toward the root, just as you would with your own hair.

Brush your Pomeranian with a metal pin brush. Brush him regularly, at least once a week, to prevent tangles from forming.
