How to Brush Canine Teeth

Brushing your dog's teeth is important both for your dog's appearance and good health. Brushing helps reduce plaque and tartar, which leads to gingivitis and other dental problems. Before you begin brushing your dog's teeth, you should have your veterinarian check over your dog and clean your dog's teeth, if necessary. It's important to start out with a dog that has a clean mouth rather than trying to fix a problem. Most dogs are not used to brushing, so it may take a few tries to get your dog used to the process.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Get your dog used to the pet toothpaste. Offer a small amount to lick off your finger.

    • 2

Using your finger, gently rub a few of your dog's teeth, getting it used to you touching its mouth and teeth. Give plenty of praise and treats as you go along.

    • 3

Increase the number of teeth you touch as your dog becomes comfortable with you handling its mouth. This may take several days or even several weeks.

    • 4

Brush your dog's teeth with the toothbrush and pet toothpaste. Brush in a circular motion and then down on the front teeth. Brush up on the lower teeth.

    • 5

    • 6

Brush daily or as frequently as you can.
