How to Clean a Pug's Creases

Your short-haired pug may not require a great deal of brushing, but the creases on its face that give pugs their signature impish appearance frequently collect grime. These creases, called folds, store dirt, dust and other materials that may lead to sores and an infection if you do not clean them often enough. If you notice your pug rubbing his face along the carpet or on a door frame, he may be bothered by matter inside the facial folds. Clean all of your pug's folds daily to keep your pet healthy.

Instructions

    • 1

Dampen a clean washcloth with warm water. The cloth should be moist but not dripping.

    • 2

Lift a fold gently with one hand and wipe the washcloth along the crease. If the fold is heavily soiled, use a clean area of the washcloth to wipe the crease again.

    • 3

Clean the other folds on your pug's face in the same manner, using a clean portion of the washcloth each time to avoid spreading the dirt.

    • 4

Wipe the wrinkles around the pug's eyes and nose gently.

    • 5

Wipe the fold just above the nose. Check the washcloth after wiping the nose for yellow discharge and a foul-smelling odor. If you notice this, take your pug to your veterinarian.

Lift all of the other folds and check them for evidence of an infection. Take your pug to your veterinarian if you see any sores, rashes or redness. Give the pug a sniff. A musty odor can also indicate an infection or other health problem. Yeast (fungal) infections are common in dogs with wrinkly faces.

Apply a quarter-sized amount of canine ear cleaner onto a square of gauze. Use the gauze to give the pug's folds a final wipe. The ear cleaner has a slight drying agent that may help the folds stay clean longer.
