How to Put on an Elizabethan Collar

The dreaded Elizabethan collar can evoke fear in any pet. Though cumbersome, the large, cone-shaped collar helps prevent your pet from biting, licking or damaging an affected area, such as a wound. If you know in advance that your pet will need to wear the collar, you can help it become accustomed to it by putting the collar on for trial runs. Expect your pet to try a Houdini act with the collar, and be comforting yet firm with your pet to make the process easier.

Instructions

    • 1
Ensure that you have the right fit for your pet.

Consult with your veterinarian on the size of the Elizabethan collar to be fitted on your pet. If you opt for the kind that fits with a pet collar, thread the pet collar through the Elizabethan collar and fasten it to your pet's neck. Otherwise, a regular Elizabethan collar will tie together with laces or attach with Velcro.

Work with the collar until it fits.

Adjust your pet's Elizabethan collar. If you can't put your fingers between your pet's skin and the collar, readjust the collar so it fits without being constrictive.

Help your pet accept its fate.

Train your pet to become accustomed to the collar. Take the collar off for 10 to 15 minutes and then reattach it for 10 to 15 minutes, advises the Churchfield Veterinary Centre. The process should be repeated to help your pet realize it has no other alternative but to wear the collar.
