How to Groom Giant Schnoodles

It's a schnauzer. It's a poodle. No, it's a schnoodle. This "designer" dog breed is created by crossbreeding giant schnauzers with standard-size poodles. The result is a hybrid dog that can weigh anywhere between 65 and 90 pounds. Schnoodles are good news for would-be dog owners with allergies. They don't shed, and their coats are hypoallergenic. Regular grooming will keep your schnoodle looking its best, and will also help keep your dog healthy.

Brush your schnoodle once or twice a week. This will prevent tangles in that wavy fur. Because schnoodles don't shed, regular brushing is also necessary to remove dead fur. Use a regular soft-bristle dog brush on your schnoodle.

Trim your schnoodle's hair every six to eight weeks to keep it from becoming long and shaggy (and therefore harder to care for). Use dog clippers at home or make regular appointments for your schnoodle with a professional groomer.

Bathe your schnoodle when needed. Use dog formula shampoo and conditioner. Avoid human shampoos, which can cause skin dryness or irritation. Rinse your schnoodle thoroughly to remove shampoo or conditioner residue and dry your dog with a towel or a hair dryer on low heat.

Clean your schnoodle's ears with water or saline solution. Swab the ears with a soft towel or cotton ball. Dry the ears thoroughly with a dry towel after cleaning and each time your schnoodle gets wet (this breed loves water, so your dog will get wet). This will prevent ear infections.

Trim your schnoodle's toenails whenever they are long enough to click on the floor as your dog walks. An active schoodle will wear its nails down on the sidewalk or pavement, but a dog that spends most of its time indoors will need its nails trimmed more often. Choose a nail trimmer for large breed dogs and trim the nail just below the quick. In dogs with white nails, this is the dark or pink spot inside the nail. For dogs with dark nails, trim the ends of the nails a bit at a time until you see a circle forming in the middle of the clippings.

Brush your schnoodle's teeth. Purchase a dog toothbrush and dog toothpaste from your local pet store. Avoid using human toothpaste, which can be toxic to dogs if swallowed. Keep your schnoodle's teeth brushed regularly to avoid plaque buildup. Plaque can introduce bacteria into your schnoodle's system and cause health problems.
