How to Clean Two-Week-Old Puppies

A newborn puppy is usually groomed and cared for by the mother. Sometimes a young mother does not know how to care for her pups or she is not interested in doing so. Usually bathing a pup before they are 4 weeks old is not recommended, but if the mother is not taking care of her pups then human intervention is necessary. Bathing and keeping a young puppy clean is a simple process, and will help acclimate the pup to water so it won't be afraid of it later in life.

Instructions

  1. Wash Cloth Method

Wet a washcloth with warm water. Hold your puppy in your hand or place him in your lap. Gently clean its genital area with the wet, warm washcloth. If he has feces stuck to his fur, you can put a little mineral oil on the area and let it sit for an hour. The mineral oil will help to soften the feces and allow you to wipe the area clean.

Using the warm washcloth, wipe your pup's coat to moisten it. You want to be certain that you do not soak your pup. Newborn puppies can not regulate body temperature, so you just want to wipe the coat clean. You also do not need shampoo at this age. A young pups skin is sensitive, and water will clean its coat well enough.

Wrap your pup in a warm towel to help keep it warm and dry. You can use a blow-dryer on its warm, low setting to gently dry the pup. Be certain that the pup is completely dry before placing it back in its box.
