How to Calm a Dog During Bath Time

Dogs that are not used to being wet or handled may get very stressed and agitated when it's time to take a bath. Some dogs just don't like being wet, even if they're used to it. Bath time does not have to be this way if you take the right approach to calm your dog. After a while, your dog will understand the process and your techniques will begin to remove some of the bathing hassles.

Instructions

Handle your dog. Start handling your dog in areas that need to be cleaned but that might not be very comfortable, such as around the ears or under the tail. Handle these areas outside of the tub so your dog doesn't mind when the water is going.

    • 2

Lead your dog to the tub where you'll be doing the bathing. Start by keeping your dog still in the empty tub for several seconds. Praise your dog and offer a treat.

    • 3

Add a few inches of water. Once your dog can stand in the tub or bathing area for a few minutes, add more water. Get your dog's paws or tail a little wet. Again, reinforce good behavior with praise and treats.

Stay happy and positive when you try a real bath. This will help teach your dog that bath time is enjoyable and nothing to be stressed about. Never yell while your dog is getting a bath. Never get water inside a dog's ears.

Continue to offer treats and praise throughout the bath. If you bathe your dog when his stomach is empty, treats will be more effective.
