How to Get Stickers Off of Shih Tzus

While Shih Tzu's are cute and sweet, they're often adventurous dogs, too. They enjoy doing their own thing, which means they may wander into areas they aren't supposed to be. Due to their long flowing coat, if they wander into an area with lots of weeds, burrs and stickers, these may instantly stick to their hair -- and the more they move, the deeper the sticker can get and the tighter the hair wraps around it. When this happens, there is a way to remove the stickers without hurting the dog.

Instructions

  1. Removing Stickers from Shih Tzu's

    • 1

Hold the hair down at the root with one rubber-gloved hand, while gently sliding the loose stickers down the hair shaft with the other rubber-gloved hand.

    • 2

Pour a small amount of olive oil on the sticker and the hair around the sticker. Gently work the oil into and around the hair and sticker with both hands. Untangle the hair around the sticker and slide the sticker down the hair little by little until it comes out.

    • 3

Cut the stubborn stickers in half with the rounded tip scissors and use the olive oil again to see if the stickers will come out, since they are now smaller. Do not pull on the stickers because this could harm the dog. If the stickers don't come out easily, cut the dog's hair at an angle and leave as much of the length as you can.

Use the dog brush to gently brush through the Shih Tzu's coat to make sure no stickers were overlooked.

Feed the Shih Tzu treats and praise him for being so patient through this process.
