How to Clean 2-Week-Old Puppies

Sometimes when a mother dog is too young or senses something is off about one of her puppies, she will abandon the puppy to fend for itself. If this happens, it is up to humans to pick up the slack. When caring for 2-week-old puppies, sometimes it's necessary to clean the puppy after it urinates or defecates. Normally, the mother dog would do this by licking, but its possible to get the same result using a washcloth and warm water.

Pick up the puppy and hold it gently in your lap.

Take a washcloth and wet it using warm water. Gently wipe the puppy all over using the washcloth. If the puppy needs a more thorough cleaning, add a small amount of heavily diluted puppy shampoo to the washcloth. Rinse the shampoo off gently, using warm water.

Wrap the puppy in a warm towel immediately after you are finished cleaning him. Dry the puppy completely. Two-week-old puppies are unable to regulate their temperature and getting cold for any length of time could do serious harm to the puppy.
