Brush your dog's hair daily. Brushing often helps to remove dead hair and keeps the hair from getting matted. Use a pet brush and brush from the skin down. For breeds with longer hair, divide the hair into sections working from head to tail; brush the hair starting at the skin and work the brush all the way to the end of the hair.

Wash the dog's hair at least once every two weeks with a brightening shampoo to keep their hair bright and radiant. Over time, your dog's hair will get dull and start to get damaged and develop breakage, so by using a clarifying shampoo, you will remove buildup and keep your dog looking his best. Brightening shampoos will remove stains from food, straighten the hair and make it resistant to staining in the future.

Add a ribbon to a female dog's hair to make her look extra fancy for the day. If the dog's hair is long enough, use a comb to part her hair on the top of her head by her ears. Create a small ponytail with a grooming band, and make sure it is secured firmly, but not too tight to avoid hurting the dog. Use a barrette with a bow attached and clip it to the front of the ponytail you created.
