Haircut Tips For Long Haired Toy Poodles

Poodles are medium-sized dogs with long, often very curly coats. Like all long-haired dogs, they should have their hair trimmed regularly to keep their coats healthy and avoid health problems. Poodle owners can either bring their dogs to a professional groomer or give their dog a haircut at home themselves.
  1. Equipment

    • Never use clippers with dull blades on your poodle. Dull blades can pull hairs as well as leave burns on its skin, similar to razor burn on people. Always have a fine-tooth comb on hand to comb out any excess fur from the poodle's coat before and after trimming.

    Timeline

    • Adult poodles can have their hair trimmed every six to eight weeks. Some poodle owners may wish to keep their dogs' hair longer and forego the regular hair trimming. While this is fine for the dog, it still needs to have the fur between its toes trimmed and the hair that grows over its eyes trimmed.

    Puppies

    • Trim poodle puppies' feet, face and tail every four weeks once it is eight weeks old until it has reached six months old. This helps the puppy get used to being groomed. Otherwise, when it needs grooming as an adult, it may become scared by the noise of the clippers and be difficult to groom.

    Extras

    • Hair trimming is the perfect opportunity to closely check over your dogs' body for ticks, bumps, cuts or dry skin, as well as perform other grooming tasks like nail trimming. Long-haired dogs like poodles often need the hairs inside their ears plucked out when it has its coat trimmed.
