How to Bathe Your Yorkie Puppy

Yorkshire terriers, or Yorkies, have hair that grows long rather quickly and needs to be groomed regularly. The recommended grooming includes a weekly bath and brushing or combing at least twice a week. Yorkie puppies especially do not favor baths or water in general, so you will want to introduce your puppy to the bath slowly.

Help ease your dog's discomfort in the bath by first introducing him to the tub while it is empty. Put a non-slip mat in the tub and let him play in the dry tub for a short time several days in a row, then gradually add trickles of warm water to the tub.

    • 2

Gently brush your puppy's fur to remove knots and tangles. If the tangles are hard to remove, spray a de-tangler in his fur and let it sit for a few minutes.

    • 3

Turn on the bathtub water to lukewarm and let the tub fill up several inches.

    • 4

Set your puppy into the bath, gently, while talking in a soothing voice. He may be afraid at first but if he is used to the bathtub when empty he will soon recognize where he is and calm down. Give him a couple minutes to adjust to the feeling of the water on his paws before you begin wetting the rest of his body.

    • 5

Wet your Yorkie's fur starting with his feet and legs, then moving on to the stomach, chest and back, and finishing with his head.

    • 6

Apply a small amount of shampoo to his fur and work it in; avoiding using a circular motion as that will cause more tangles. Shampoo his fur in the same order you wet it. Rinse the shampoo from the hair thoroughly.

    • 7

Apply a light conditioner to his fur. While working it in, talk to him in a soothing voice to reassure him before rinsing it out. Rinse a few extra times to be sure there is no shampoo or conditioner residue.

Take your puppy out of the bath and wrap him in a soft, dry towel. Hold him in the towel for several minutes and pat his fur dry. Now is a good time to trim his facial and ear hairs. While the fur is still damp, brush out any remaining knots or tangles.
