How to Trim a Dog's Tail

Veterinarians and dog groomers recommend regular grooming for all dogs to keep them looking and feeling their best. Some owners choose professional grooming services for their dogs, while others choose to handle their pet's grooming needs on their own. Brush your dog's teeth twice per week, brush its coat every day, and trim its fur and nails as needed.

Determine how you wish to trim your dog's tail. There are many different styles for dog tails, or simple grooming in which excess fur is removed from the dog's tail.

Locate the bone in your dog's tail. Run your fingers down the bone gently to locate the size and shape of the bone.

    • 4

Gently trim the excess fur from your dog's tail. Ensure that you do not cut the bone or the muscle and skin tissue that it is encased in.
