Pomeranian Grooming Cuts and Styles

The Pomeranian is a small, intelligent and courageous little dog. This breed's fur is long and double-coated and should be regularly groomed to keep it healthy. There are specific grooming cuts for Pomeranians that can enhance the dog's appearance and keep the animal cool in the summer. However, it's worth noting that shaving or cutting a Pomeranian's fur too short can be detrimental to the fur's condition and look after it grows back.
  1. The Lion Cut

    • This popular summer cut involves shaving the dog's body and leaving the animal's chest, head and neck fur long so that it resembles a male lion's mane. The tail is cut, too, to resemble a lion's. This style will keep the dog cooler in warm climates. But some grooming experts do not recommend it because the cut involves shaving the fur, which will affect its ability to grow back to its original and healthy condition. This is a cut that requires an electric trimmer and some skill.

    Shaved Look

    • Some Pomeranian owners have their dog's fur shaved all over. Again, it is worth noting the possible side effects of having this done to the coat because as with a lion cut the fur will not grow back to its original condition. The hair might grow back in patches or become ingrown and cause discomfort. Because the dog no longer has the padding that long fur provides, it also might become susceptible to developing sores on the legs or other areas when lying down. Skin allergies also will become aggravated because the skin is exposed.

    The Teddy Bear Cut

    • This cut often is recommended by groomers for Pomeranians during summer months. It involves trimming the hair all over the body to create a short cut but without the extremes of a close shave. It also is time-consuming cut that is best done by a professional groomer for an even look. A professional groomer often will use scissors and an electric trimmer to perform this cut.

    Naturally Groomed

    • Pomeranians naturally have thick fur that gives the breed its characteristic look. Some owners might prefer not to shave or cut the coat short, keeping it long and natural instead. This still requires regular grooming. The fur should be brushed daily to remove tangles and keep the coat clean. Excess hair can be trimmed from the face, tail, inside the ears and from the bottoms of paws with small, round-tipped scissors every couple of weeks. Trim toenails routinely. Hair around the dog's anus can be trimmed or gently shaved (not down to the skin) to keep the area clean.
