How to Groom a Pomimo

The Pomimo is a mixed breed dog from a Pomeranian and an American Eskimo. Both of these breeds are double-coated and do shed. There are two ways to groom a Pomimo dog. Pet owners can remove loose hair on a daily basis by combing or they may opt for a short lion clip. While the lion clip is not recommended for most double-coated breeds, these dogs are so small they are usually kept inside and out of harsh weather.

Instructions

  1. Style Grooming for a Pomimo

    • 1

Use the shedding comb to remove as much loose hair as possible. Comb the dog in both directions from head to toe and back. Concentrate on the thickest parts of the dog's coat: the mane, rear haunches and tail.

    • 2

Remove any remaining loose hair with the slicker brush. Break any mats in the Pomimo's coat with the small mat rake before bathing.

    • 3

Using the blade on the dog clippers, remove all the hair from the navel to the groin area. Lift the dog's front legs to get a better view of the area while shaving. Remove as much hair as you like on the inside of the rear legs, as well, for cleanliness. Using a cool blade, remove the hair surrounding the anus, being careful not to let the blade come in contact with the anus.

    • 4

Grab the towels, shampoo and conditioner and take the dog to the bathing area. Bathe the dog by wetting the entire coat first, then work in the diluted shampoo to a thick lather. Rinse the fur until the water runs clear. Use diluted conditioner to soften the fur and prevent more mats from forming. Rinse the conditioner until the water runs clear.

    • 5

With the dog still in the bathing area, use the ear cleaner to remove dirt from each ear. Squirt a small amount of ear cleaner in each ear and work out the dirt by rubbing the base of the ear from the outside using your hands. Remove loosened dirt with cotton balls or swabs.

    • 6

Use the tear stain remover on a cotton ball to remove any dark stains from under and around the dog's eyes. Report any excessive drainage or foul smells to your veterinarian.

    • 7

Dry the Pomimo completely using a cage dryer or a hand blow dryer. Blow the hair in all directions to help loosen more hair for removal.

    • 8

Repeat steps one and two above.

    • 9

Trim the dog's toenails, being careful not to cut too short. Cut just past the red line on the back of the toenail; this is the quick or where the blood vessels start. Apply the styptic powder to any nails that are cut too short to stop any bleeding. Remove any blood from the dog's foot by using hydrogen peroxide on a cotton ball.

    • 10

Use the scissors to trim the fur between the pads of each foot even with the pads. Trim the fur on the top of the foot for a rounded appearance. Do not remove the fur between the toes, just trim them to blend in on top.

    • 11

Let the hair part naturally on the back and comb straight down the sides of the dog. Use the scissors to trim away any stray hairs or trim to the desired length on each side.

    • 12

Lift the front leg and comb the hair straight out away from the leg. Trim any stray hairs or to the desired length. Repeat the process on the other side.

    • 13

Comb through the Pomimo's mane by holding the dog's snout lightly in one hand and combing back and away from the body and head. Use the scissors to trim any stray hairs and blend the mane into the body fur.

    • 14

Comb through the tail by holding by the tip away from the body and combing straight down. Use the scissors to trim stray hairs or to the desired length.

    Shaving Down a Pomimo

    • 15

Complete steps one and two above.

    • 16

Using a #9 or blade on the clippers, start at the base of the neck and shave the fur in the direction of growth to the base of the tail. Continue to remove the fur from the body of the dog and down the legs. Replace the grooming blades as they get hot.

    • 17

Complete steps three through ten in section one above.

    • 18

Using the same length of blade you used previously, go over the entire dog's body again to get an even shave. Leave the mane, feet and tail for now.

    • 19

Complete steps 13 and 14 in section one.
