Things You'll Need
- Nail clippers
- Styptic pencil (optional)
Instructions
Purchase nail clippers designed for dogs. Choose between two types: the "guillotine" and the "scissor" designs, both available from pet stores. The easiest to use and most common is the "guillotine," because its design prevents the dog's from slipping out. Have a styptic pencil, also available at pet stores, on hand in case you accidentally cut into the quick (the vein that runs down into the claw) and cause bleeding.
Read the instructions that come with the nail clippers. Check that the cutting blade is facing you. Squeeze the handle to clip the nail at least two millimeters below the vein, trying to avoid the quick.
Position your dog comfortably on the floor or on a grooming table. If he does not cooperate, restrain him by holding his head down with your left arm over his neck; lean over him, holding the paw with your left hand and the clippers with the right hand.
Use your upper body to help keep the dog still, and make sure you can see the nail properly before trimming. Lay the dog on his side if he is more comfortable this way, lean over him with your arms over his neck and body and hold the paws one at a time to be clipped as described.
Have someone help you if your dog is too difficult to control. The other person can hold him down while you clip the nails. Talk soothingly to the dog to help him calm down and relax.
Repeat the process until all nails are trimmed, applying styptic pencil to any areas that bleed in the event you nick the quick.
