How to Use Electric Clippers to Cut Dog Hair

Every year when summertime rolls around it gets pretty hot, particularly for our four-legged friends who have copious amounts of fur. One way to clip your dog's fur is to use a pair of electric clippers. This makes the trimming process as quick as possible. This process takes a bit of technique and the proper tools.

Put the dog in the same room as the clippers for a few days before you actually cut his hair. Let him smell and inspect the clippers. Turn on the clippers a few days into the process, so your dog gets used to the sound. Praise the dog frequently and offer dog treats as the process continues.

Open up the electric clipper kit and read the labels on the clipper attachments. Find one that is the length you're looking for, so the resulting hair is the length you desire. Place this attachment on the end of the clippers.

Position the dog in front of you, with his face toward you. Put on his leash as well, to hold him in place. Turn on the clippers and start cutting the dog's hair, working from the front of the dog back, and working with the natural flow of the hair. Praise the dog frequently.

Work from the top down, removing the hair in bulk, then going back and cleaning up details as necessary. Be careful when clipping around the genitals and underbelly, so you don't catch the skin, and don't burn his skin with the clippers. Give the dog a treat when it's all done.
