- Nail clippers Clippers
- Cotton balls andblades
- Ear cleaner Scissors
Instructions
Bathe your dog. Wet your dog thoroughly and shampoo, creating a rich lather. Rinse your dog and repeat the process. Be sure the final rinse removes all shampoo.
Towel dry your dog as well as possible and use a blow dryer to remove all excess water from the coat. Blow drying will also remove loose and dead fur.
Use the nail clippers to cut your dog's nails. Cut back the tip of each nail that seems to curve like a hook. On a dog's white nails you can visibly see the vein within the nail and you want to cut above that vein. Clip each nail, including the dew claws.
Take a cotton ball, put a few drops of ear cleaner on it and clean as far into the ear as you can, as well as the outer ear leather.
Put a
blade on your clippers. Clip under the belly of your dog by and around the private areas. Shave in a downward motion in the direction of the hair growth. Also clip around the rectal area.
Switch blades to ablade and carefully clip the fur from under the dog's pads. Use your brush to bring the fur forward in the opposite direction of growth. This is the fur that you will clip under the pad.
Brush out your dog from head to toe. Work on one section of the dog at a time, brushing in the direction of hair growth. Be sure to look and feel for mats. If you find mats, use the detangler comb to try and cut through the mat and follow with the greyhound comb. When working on a mat, hold the matted fur of your dog close to the skin with two fingers and thumb in order to reduce any strain on your dog when tugging at a mat. Complete this process of brushing your dog completely.
With the comb, lift the hair up on the head and use scissors to cut about an inch in length. Length varies depending on how short or long you want on your Pomeranian. You are aiming to give your dog a completely round head. Continue to comb the hair up on the top, sides and below the mouth and chin to be sure no hairs are sticking out. Continue scissoring for that smooth round look.
Work along the back and sides of your dog in the same manner, combing the fur upward as you cut the desired length. Work straight down the back up to the base of the tail and down one side at a time. Clipping the body of the dog is a lengthy process, requiring a steady hand and patience. Keep combing up and backward and clipping until you get a smooth even effect. Proceed to do the same with the chest and belly area. When finished, the dog's body will look almost like velvet with an even length all over.
Blend the legs to the length of the body, following the same procedure; comb the hair up and backward while clipping the fur. The finished look will take on the shape of the leg with all even lines, like the rest of the body. Use the brush to brush the hair on the paws against the growth and trim any fur that is sticking out and up. This will create a nice rounded paw.
Comb out the tail to make sure there are no mats. Gather the fur in your hands, work your way down to the tip of the tail where you only feel fur. Twist all the hair together and cut a straight line across the tip where the hair is twisted, making sure that you only cut fur. Gather the tip of the tail in your hand, making sure the fur is divided on both sides and comb the fur down. Trim the tail to the desired length in the shape of a fan. Be sure there are no unruly hairs sticking out on the sides of the tail.
