Different Hair Clips for Poodles

Poodles are known for their dense, versatile, curly hair. Grooming for these types of animals takes a lot of care and attention. Their hair can be clipped into many styles -- not just for appearance but to also prevent the hair from matting. Hair-clipping poodles can improve the dog's quality of life.
  1. The Puppy Clip

    • The Puppy Clip is normally worn by poodles under 12 months of age. It is an approved clip style by the American Kennel Club, for poodles who are competing in a dog show. With this clip, the poodle's feet, tail, face and throat are completely shaved with a pompon at the end of its tail. The poodle's entire foot is shaven and visible, and the remaining hair on the poodle is left long. To maintain a neat appearance, the poodle's hair can be shaped.

    The Bikini Clip

    • The Bikini Clip is also known as the Miami or the Summer Clip. It can be identified on a poodle by its bikini-finished look. A poodle's face, feet and the base of its tail are shaved close. The bottom of the legs are shaped into a pompon starting just above the wrist and the hock ending just above the feet. The body hair is left fluffy but not too long -- the length of the hair depends on the owner's preference. It can be cut into shape with scissors.

    The Dutch Clip

    • The Dutch Clip is a creative clip style. This style is most noticeable by the closely shaved hair around the belly band of the poodle. The belly band area may be shaved thin or wide. The poodle's face, feet, neck area and base of the tail are also shaved closely. The rest of the poodle is left fluffy -- these areas include the head, legs and tail of the poodle.

    The Continental Clip

    • The Continental Clip is another show clip style that can be worn by poodles competing in a dog show. With this hair clip style the face, feet, throat and base of the tail are shaved. The legs of the poodle are shaved with bracelets left on the hindlegs and puffs on the forelegs. The foot is completely shaven, visible and a pompon is left on the end of the tail. The rest of the hair on the body is left full but can be shaped to balance the overall appearance of the coat.
