How to Eliminate Skunk Smell on Pets

If you have an outdoor pet, there's always a risk that your furry friend could get sprayed by a skunk. Skunk spray is nasty stuff, made of pungent oils secreted from glands on each side of the skunk's anus. If a skunk feels threatened by your curious pet, you can bet the pet is going to get a face full of stink. The terrible smell is hard to get rid of with normal pet shampoo, but a blend of certain household cleansers removes skunk smell fast.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure one quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution.

    • 2

Measure 1/4 cup of baking soda.

    • 3

Measure 1-2 teaspoons of liquid dish soap.

    • 4

Mix all three ingredients in a bucket or large bowl.

    • 5

Apply the solution to your pet's fur using a rag or sponge. Use the mixture immediately because the chemical reaction of the three ingredients only lasts for a few minutes. The fresher the mixture, the better it works as a skunk odor remover.

    • 6

Work the mixture into the animal's fur. Avoid getting any in its eyes.

    • 7

Rinse off the mixture after a few minutes.

    • 8

Pour out any unused solution. The mixture only works when it's fresh, and it bursts open a sealed container if you try to save it for later.
