  1. Bathing and Odor

    • Baking soda can be used as a wet bath or as a dry rub to reduce dog odor.

You can give a dog a dry bath with baking soda to help decrease pet odor and skunk smell. When giving a dry rub of baking soda make sure the powder gets to the skin. For a wet rub combine baking soda, dishwashing soap, baby oil and water in spray bottle. Spray the baking soda mixture on the dog by parting the hair and spraying the skin where odor and dry skin collect.

    Accidents

    • Dogs do not always urinate outside.

After training, dogs occasionally urinate on the floor when they are excited or afraid. When this occurs the worst thing to do is to clean the soiled area with an ammonia product. Urine contains ammonia so cleaning a urine spot with ammonia makes the scent stronger. Baking soda mixed with club soda lifts the scent from fabric. Let the club soda and the baking soda dry and then vacuum afterward. You can sprinkle baking soda dry on the urine spot and let it sit over night to help pull the urine scent out of the carpet, then vacuum.

    Teeth and Gums

    • Brushing your dog's teeth with baking soda will help keep gums healthy.

Take an old soft toothbrush and dampen it with warm water. Dip the damp toothbrush into baking soda and brush your dog's teeth and tongue. After a good brushing maintain your dog's oral health by rinsing its mouth routinely with a mixture of 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda and 1 cup of warm water. The mouth rinse will help keep your dog's breath fresh and keep plaque and tartar from collecting at the gum line.

    Flatulence

    • Sodium bicarbonate is an acidic mixture that produces CO2. Sodium bicarbonate can reduce flatulence in dogs. The baking soda, mixed with water and a few drops of apple cider vinegar counteract the eruption of stomach acids that produce bloating and gas. Dogs often eat rotten dead animals when they are allowed to run free. Baking soda relieves a dog of an upset or sour stomach. When dogs eat outside of their normal diet, flatulence can "stink" up the entire house.
