How to Wash a Dog With Selsun Blue Shampoo

Among the many common conditions seen in veterinary offices are dermatological problems. While some cats and dogs have allergies causing their symptoms, the more common problem is either a bacterial (Superficial pyoderma) or yeast (Malassezia dermatitis) infection. Itching, dander, shedding, hair loss, scaly or flaking skin and an offensive odor are all symptoms of these infections.

According to DermaPet Veterinary Pharmaceuticals, 12 to 20 percent of dogs and cats have skin problems that require frequent brushing and bathing. Selsun Blue -- a medicated, hypoallergenic shampoo containing selenium sulfide -- will alleviate symptoms and give your pet some relief.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush your pet to remove any loose hair or surface debris. Cut and remove any matted hair, especially around the ears, base of the tail, legs and belly area.

    • 2

Test the bath water before placing your pet into it to ensure that you have a comfortable temperature. Water that's too hot or too cold can be harmful to your pet and it can also irritate the condition.

    • 3

Place your pet in the water slowly, to avoid frightening him. Lay a mat or a towel on the bottom of the tub to prevent slipping, which could cause injury.

    • 4

Wet your pet completely, making sure no water gets into his eyes or ears. Your pet's fur must be thoroughly wet to get a proper lather.

    • 5

Shake the Selsun Blue shampoo bottle to mix the contents, then pour a small amount into the palm of your hand -- the necessary amount will vary per the size of your pet.

    • 6

Gently massage the shampoo into your pet's wet fur to remove any debris, loose skin, scales and flakes. Rub gently if the skin is irritated and be careful not to get shampoo into your pet's eyes or ears. Leave the shampoo on the fur for the amount of time recommended on the bottle.

    • 7

Rinse the shampoo from the fur thoroughly, until the water runs clear.

    • 8

Pat your pet dry with a towel; for long-haired pets, you may need more than one towel. Use a blow-dryer on low heat, if your pet will tolerate it.

    • 9

Brush your pet's fur when it's completely dry to remove any hair loosened by the bathing process.
