How to Take Care of a Puppy Yorkie's Hair

The long hair of a Yorkshire terrier puppy presents several difficult problems including matting and tangling. Proper grooming involves bathing, brushing and cutting. All steps of the grooming process are potentially uncomfortable for the puppy. As a result, a main focus of Yorkshire puppy grooming includes praise and cautiousness to provide the most positive experience and prevent any hair-pulling that may hurt. The positive experience carries over to maturity, and your Yorkshire terrier should never have a problem with grooming in the future.

Instructions

  1. Brushing and Cutting

    • 1

Fill a spray bottle with half water and half dog hair conditioner, preferably a no-cry brand to protect your puppy's eyes. The water-conditioner mix softens the hair and eases the brushing process. Skipping this part increases the chance of the brush getting tangled in knotted hair and causing a small amount of pain.

    • 2

Remove large hair knots with your fingers.

    • 3

Comb your puppy's fur with a pin brush. Work your way around the entire coat until all knots are removed.

    • 4

Cut the dog's hair so that no hair is touching the floor. Cut hair out of the ears as well.

    Washing

    • 5

Wash out your kitchen sink and place a plastic mat on the bottom. Fill with lukewarm water. Fill just enough, so your puppy can sit in a pool of water.

    • 6

Add no-cry puppy shampoo to the water and mix together to create suds.

    • 7

Place your puppy into the sink gently. When fully inside, give the puppy a treat to create a positive association with the bath.

    • 8

Wash the fur with your hands, working your way around the puppy's body. Avoid the eyes and inside of the ears.

    • 9

Drain the sink and rinse of you puppy. Make sure to rinse off hard-to-reach spots such as the stomach and legs. Immediately dry off with a towel and give another treat.
