How to Train a Rottweiler Puppy to Take a Bath

Training a puppy takes time and patience, whether you're potty training him, teaching him to walk on a leash or to getting him used to taking a bath. Approach the first bath carefully. That first experience can fill him with good memories that will help during every bath time or bad ones that can really make the chore a chore. Treats can help, but the key is to relax with your Rottweiler puppy, be patient and do not to push him into anything.

Instructions

  1. Practice First

    • 1

Walk the puppy over to a dry, empty tub. Put a treat in the tub. Place him in the tub to get used to being in there.

    • 2

Give him the treat if he doesn't try to get out. If he does try to get out, don't push him to stay in the tub. Take him out. This process could take several tries on different occasions until he's calmer while in the tub.

    • 3

Pour a small amount of water over his face and feet then gently rub the water around. This should let him know the water will not affect him and he will not be hurt while in the tub. Give him another treat and plenty of verbal praise.

    • 4

Gently dry him off with a towel. Take him out of the tub, praise him again for doing a good job and give him another treat.

    Ready for the Real Bath

    • 5

Place the puppy in a dry tub. Turn on the water, but make sure it is a comfortably warm temperature. Water that's too hot could hurt and scare him.

    • 6

Pour a small amount of water over him. Start with his back and give him praises as you do it. Continue to pour small amounts of water on the rest of his body.

    • 7

Work the soap gently into his coat while continuing to praise him. Watch out for his eyes and inside his ears. The rinsing should be done just as carefully as the washing.

    • 8

Dry him off gently, and thoroughly, with a towel. Get him out and give him a treat and final praise.
