Things You'll Need
- Dog brush
- Cornstarch
- Fine-tooth comb
- Treats
- Scissors
- Dog clippers
Instructions
Brush your dog using the dog brush in order to assess the extent of the matting. Sprinkle some cornstarch on the smaller mats and brush gently, working your way through the tangles with the help of your fingers. Give praise and treats to your dog to reward compliant behavior.
Slide the fine-tooth comb under the mat right between the mat and the skin. Using the scissors, cut the mat free making sure you avoid the skin. If you are concerned about accidentally cutting through the skin, open the scissors and allow one blade through the base of the mat before cutting away from the skin. Cut only when you see the blade through the hair.
Cut through the most severe mats using the dog clippers' shortest blade. These are mats that cannot be loosened using the comb and scissors because they are very tightly connected to the skin. Be very careful in shaving off the mats as it may be difficult at times to differentiate where the mats end and the skin begins. Always cut up and away from the skin. Continue giving praise and treats to keep the grooming session on a positive note.
Brush and comb your dog's coat thoroughly to make sure all mats have been successfully removed.
