How to Comb Through a Dog's Matted Hair

Matted hair is something that you will most likely need to deal with when your dog has longer fur than normal. However, if you take the time to brush and bathe your dog regularly, you will most likely not have to deal with this issue often. If you do notice matted hair on your dog, combing through it carefully is necessary, to get it out and to keep your dog from feeling any pain.

Instructions

    • 1

Bathe your dog and use a fur conditioner at the end of the bath. A fur conditioner will help make combing through the matted hair easier.

    • 2

Apply a detangler to the matted hair on your dog. Again, this makes the combing process easier and less painful for your dog.

    • 3

Pick out the very edges of the matted hair using a steel comb. Pick slowly and carefully to avoid pulling the hair and hurting your dog.

    • 4

Tease the matted hair using a steel brush, once you get out the edges. Again, you need to work slowly and carefully, or you could hurt your dog.

    • 5

Comb through the matted hair with a slicker brush, once you have detangled the majority of it. This will leave the fur smooth.
