How to Keep the Wrinkles of English Bulldogs Clean

The bulldog has risen out of a tragic history in the sport of bull-baiting to become a playful and affectionate family dog. It is extremely patient and is a good choice for families with young children. Bulldogs have short fur that requires minimal care aside from weekly brushing to remove dead hair. Dirt and moisture can become trapped in a bulldog's wrinkly face, however, and can cause infections. To keep your English bulldog healthy, keep its deep wrinkles clean.

Wet a washcloth or paper towel. Add shampoo if you wish, but use a gentle formula that won't irritate or dry out the sensitive skin inside your bulldog's wrinkles. Check your pet store or ask your vet for recommended shampoos.

Separate each wrinkle and wipe it down with the washcloth. Remove any dirt you see. Wash both sides of the wrinkle and be careful to reach all the way down to the deepest fold. Repeat this with another wet cloth if you used shampoo. Rinse the wrinkles thoroughly to prevent shampoo from irritating the skin.

Dry each wrinkle with a towel. The deep wrinkles on a bulldog's face (or around its tail) trap moisture, so they won't dry on their own. Wipe each wrinkle to soak up any extra water. Use a blow dryer on low to ensure that your bulldog's wrinkles are completely dry.

Wipe your bulldog's wrinkles with baby wipes if you do not have washcloths available, or use them each day you do not wash the wrinkles with shampoo. Wash your bulldog's wrinkles at least twice a week (some dogs get dirty faster and should be thoroughly cleaned every day), and do a quick cleaning with the wipes on the other days. Choose wipes with aloe to keep your bulldog's skin from becoming irritated.
