Regular Care
Moisten the Maltese's face with a damp washcloth.
Apply a small amount of mild dog shampoo to the dog's face. Be gentle, and pay special attention to any tear stains.
Scrub gently at the dog's face with a soft-bristled brush, making sure not to get soap in the dog's eyes.
Rinse the Maltese's face thoroughly with clean water.
Staining
Mix equal parts milk of magnesium and hydrogen peroxide in a bowl.
Add enough corn starch to give the mixture a pasty texture.
Use your fingers to work the paste into the stained areas.
Let the mixture dry overnight.
Wash the dog's face in the morning, and apply a conditioner to the tear-stained areas.
Repeat the process every day until the Maltese's tear staining is gone.
