Instructions
Brush your dog on a weekly basis. Use a bristle brush, not a comb, because the fur can be too thick for a comb. As you brush, pull away from the skin. This stroke removes unhealthy hair.
Look carefully through your dog's fur as you brush. If you see any knots, work through them gently. Do not pull the hair, as this can be painful.
Bathe your dog every three months. Regular baths help prevent matted fur and keep your dog's skin and coat shiny and healthy. Brush the fur right before a bath. To make the process easier, try to bathe your dog outside. Use a shampoo just for dogs and rinse the fur thoroughly. Brush the fur again when you're finished, and dry it with a towel.
Use clippers made specifically for dog fur to trim your dog's coat. Trimming the coat periodically, such as every six months, will make the grooming process easier. Trim in rows to make sure you are evening out the coat. Also, hold the clippers to the skin to keep the length of the fur at an even length.
Use a pair of guillotine-type nail clippers to groom the nails. Hold the paw apart and clip each nail at an angle above the pink area. Snipping the quick of the nail is very painful and will cause bleeding. Should bleeding occur, it can be stopped with styptic powder. Consult with your vet to be safe.
